7 Signs Your Brick Needs Tuckpointing

Key takeaways

  • Mortar wears out long before brick does.
  • Sandy, recessed or cracked joints are the first sign.
  • Water stains inside the house can start with failed joints outside.
  • Catching it early keeps the repair small.

What to look for

Walk around the house and look closely at the joints. Mortar that is sandy, crumbles under a fingernail, sits deeper than the brick face or shows hairline cracks is wearing out. Gaps around windows and where the chimney meets the roof are especially important.

Other clues: bricks that feel loose, white powder on the surface, vegetation growing from joints and damp spots on interior walls after heavy rain.

Why timing matters

Water that gets into open joints can freeze and expand, flaking brick faces. A few thousand dollars of tuckpointing can prevent a far larger repair. Repointing in mild weather, between spring and fall, gives the new mortar time to cure properly.

Tuckpointing a small section is rarely a fix. Joints age evenly, so it is usually smarter to repoint a whole elevation at once and match the color across it.

What a good job looks like

Mortar should be ground or cut out to a depth of at least two and a half times the joint width, packed in thin layers and tooled to match the existing profile. The new color should blend with the old. Sloppy tuckpointing smears mortar on the brick face and leaves joints thin and shallow.

Quick answers

How long does tuckpointing take?

A typical house elevation takes a few days, depending on height, access and the amount of mortar that has to come out.

Can I tuckpoint myself?

Small areas are possible, but matching mortar strength, color and joint profile is a skill. A bad mix can damage old brick, so we recommend a mason for anything visible.
