The overview

What it is, and why it matters.

Mortar is the sacrificial part of a brick wall. It wears so the brick does not, and when it fails, water gets in. Tuckpointing removes the failed mortar to a proper depth and packs in new mortar in layers, tooled to match the original joint so the wall looks restored, not patched.

In Nashville and the surrounding counties we tuckpoint houses, chimneys, garden walls, porches and commercial buildings. We test mortar strength for older brick and match color and joint profile carefully, because the wrong mix can damage soft brick.

Good questions

Tuckpointing: common questions

What is the difference between tuckpointing and repointing?

People use the words interchangeably. Strictly, tuckpointing adds a thin contrasting line to imitate fine joints, while repointing renews the full joint. Either way, the work is removing the old mortar and replacing it correctly.

How long does tuckpointing last?

Properly done tuckpointing lasts 25 years or more. The mix, the depth and the weather during curing all decide how long it holds.
