Lintel Replacement in Nashville, TN by TN Brick Mason in Nashville and Middle Tennessee
The rust line over your window is a warning.
The overview

What it is, and why it matters.

A lintel is the steel or stone beam that carries brick above a window or door. When steel lintels rust, they swell and push the brick up and out, causing cracks and stair-step mortar damage. Replacing the lintel stops the movement; repairing the masonry above restores the look.

In Nashville and Middle Tennessee we support the wall, cut out the damaged brick, install a new galvanized or painted lintel with proper flashing and weeps and rebuild the brick above. We do the work in sections so the wall stays supported.

Good questions

Lintel Replacement: common questions

Why are there cracks over my windows?

Rusting steel lintels expand and push on the brick, causing diagonal or stair-step cracks. Sagging or missing lintels can cause the same. An inspection will tell which it is.

Can a lintel be fixed without replacing it?

Sometimes light rust can be treated, but swollen or cracked lintels need replacement. Painting a rusted lintel does not stop the damage.
