Repointing and Mortar Repair in Nashville, TN by TN Brick Mason in Nashville and Middle Tennessee
Mortar should be softer than the brick it protects.
The overview

What it is, and why it matters.

Repointing is not just filling cracks. It means removing weathered mortar, choosing a mortar softer than the brick, matching sand, color and joint style and installing it in thin layers. Using mortar that is too hard traps moisture and breaks brick faces, which is the most common repointing mistake.

Around Nashville we repoint entire elevations, chimneys and historic buildings, and spot-repoint problem areas. We make test panels so you can approve color and tooling before the whole wall is done.

Why homeowners choose it

Compatible mortar

Softer than the brick so the wall can breathe.

Good questions

Repointing & Mortar Repair: common questions

Can I just seal the wall instead of repointing?

Sealer does not fix failed mortar. If joints are open or crumbling, water will still get in. Repoint first, and add a breathable sealer afterward only if it will help.

What mortar is best for old brick?

Old brick usually needs a softer, often lime-rich mortar. We test the old mortar and the brick and mix a compatible one so the wall stays sound.
